Presentation from Macedonia - Mr MILEVSKI

Activities in the Republic Hydrometeorological Institute

Republic Hydrometeorological Institute is organized as republic institution for performing the functions in the field of hydrometeorology and its activities are determined by the law. The state budget provides 95 % of the financial resources required for the operation of the services to various users. From 1st of July 1993, Republic of Macedonia became a member of the WMO. The Institute is organized in four departments and there are 238 employees.

In Meteorological Department, data of meteorological elements and phenomena from all measuring points are collected, processed and archived in documentation of the Institute. Meteorological station network consists in : 14 main synoptical stations, 15 main climatological stations, 17 regular climatological stations, 1 aerological station and 187 precipitation stations. Among them, meteorological station Skopje - Petrovec is included in the international exchange climate programmes. Climatological division has taken numerous activities for the purpose of energetic potential research of sun radiation and wind, impact of weather and climate on forestry and agriculture, meteorological statistical research. Agrometeorological data and observations are in accordance with regulations of WMO. The measurements are carried out with standard instruments and they are used to obtain daily, weekly, annual phenological report. In the Division for weather analysis and forecast, exchange of meteorological data with other national meteorological services is carried out according to the plan and programme of WMO. The data exchange is carried out by directly hired line with Belgrade and by Regional Center in Sofia. Radiosounding measurements of meteorological elements at 00 :00 o'clock are carried out at aerological station Skopje - Petrovec.

A network of hydrological stations was created in order to monitor hydrological elements. It includes 110 surface water stations and 115 groundwater stations. Water level and water temperature are monitored on hydrological stations for surface water. Water samples for suspended deposit are taken on 20 stations and control measurements of water quantity are carried out periodically. Hydrological reports, elaboration and information are prepared for requirements of water management, electrical industry, industry, military, etc. On the territory of Macedonia, air quality is controlled at 20 measuring points. 24-hourly concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), and low ozone (Oz) are monitored. The water quality is controlled at 65  measuring points. Physical-chemical, chemical, toxicological, radiological, microbiological and saprobiological investigations of samples are carried out in the laboratory. Groundwater quality is controlled from time to time, only on the territory of Skopje. By analysing water samples (surface, groundwater and waste water) the following parameters are determined : physical features of water, oxygenic regime, mineral structure, contents of heavy metals, harmful and dangerous materials.

Basic activities of the Hail suppression and Weather Modification Department are : operative carrying out of hail suppression, investigations of physical basis of weather modification and development of operative methodology and radar meteorological observations and measurements. In the Institute a Section for computing exists for data processing and exchange.
