This project covers the 11 continental countries of the Southern
African Development Community (SADC). Its implementation started in 1998
with the 2.40 million US$ grant from the European Commission funding.
WMO has a supervisory role in the two-year project implementation.
The Pilot Regional Centre (PRC) is hosted by the Directorate of Hydrology,
Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) in Pretoria, South Africa |

AOC-HYCOS
This project covers the 11 continental countries of the West and Central
Africa which are involved in the pilot phase (one year) supported by the
French Government (280.000 US $). The Pilot Regional Center is co-ordinated
by the Niger Basin Autorithy (ABN) and the AGRHYMET Regional Centre located

AQUASTAT is a database with statistics on freshwater and its availability
in agriculture and rural development. It produces regional analyses and
country profiles on water resources development, with emphasis on irrigation
and drainage.

Objectives of MedAtlas
- To Update the available data sets of temperature and salinity profiles
measured in the Mediterranean Sea
- To Check the data Quality (QC) for scientific use according to the
IOC and MAST recommendations
- To Merge the compiled data sets and update the climatological statistics
with a resolution adapted to the Mediterranean space scales
- To Make Available the numerical data on a user friendly medium

Major activities of the GRDC include the collection and dissemination
of river discharge data on global scale, and the provision of data products
and specialised services for the research community, water managers and
water-related programmes of the specialised agencies of the United Nations

France, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Greece, Netherlands are partners in
this programme. IRD (ex ORSTOM) is already involved in the European Programme
which is dealing with the implementation of a Hydrological Information
System using GIS technologies and focused on interfacing data base with
hydrological modelling. In this programme MED-HYCOS would like to exchange
its experience in chronological data acquisition and processing with the
competencies of its partners in the field of spacial processing.

Environment Institute
Whether they are addressed to the scientific community or to meet request
from EC services, many of EI activities are scientific ones sensu stricto.
These range from studies on tropospheric ozone and on aerosols, on watershed
water quality and hydrology, on coastal-sea eutrophication, and on bio-emission
of greenhouse gases from natural systems. In the field of life sciences,
the EI co-ordinates international projects on endocrine disrupting chemicals;
on reproductive toxicity; haematotoxicity; and ecotoxicology. Concerning
the Air Quality the quality of indoor air and its role in human health.
